The Best Books About Coral Reefs

“What are the best books about Coral Reefs?” We looked at 235 of the top Coral Reef books, aggregating and ranking them so we could answer that very question!

Coral Reefs, and the Great Barrier Reef in particular, are going the way of the Dodo. And by “Going the way of the Dodo” we of course mean that humans are stupidly killing it. We aggregated together over 200 books to help better inform anyone on the endangered life filled oasis that is coral reefs. The top 35 titles, all appearing on 2 or more lists, are ranked below with images, descriptions, and links. The remaining 200 titles, as well as the lists we used, are in alphabetical order at the bottom of the page.

Happy Scrolling!

“Keeping live corals has been likened to “”Bonsai for the Cousteau generation”” and “”the ultimate underwater gardening experience.”” Beautiful, bizarre, and among nature’s most colorful creations, living corals are now being successfully kept and grown in tens of thousands of home saltwater aquariums.
For the first time, master aquarist Eric Borneman offers an authoritative, comprehensive, and fully illustrated guide to appropriate aquarium species, including a diversity of soft corals, as well as popular and rare large-polyp and small-polyp stony corals. World-class photographs and text reviewed by leading coral biologists and coral keepers guides the reader through the selection and husbandry of hundreds of species.”

Marine biologists believe coral reefs existed 400 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Today this active environment is home to about 20,000 kinds of brilliantly coloured corals, plants, and animals-more sea creatures than are found anywhere else in the world. The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is so large that astronauts can see it from outer space! But what is life like in a coral reef? What do corals eat? Why are corals more colourful at nighttime? Children will enjoy Gibbon’s informative text and clear, detailed illustrations on this journey into the unique lives of coral reefs.

26 .) Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas by Forest Rohwer, Merry Youle

Lists It Appears On:

  • Nova
  • Alibris

For millennia, coral reefs have flourished as one of the planet’s most magnificent natural wonders. As Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem-surpassing even the rainforests-they are home to a cooperative network ranging from immense fish to sunlight-capturing algae to invisible microbes. Just how critical the microbes in particular are for coral reef health is finally understood thanks to recent discoveries. Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas is the first book to unveil the complete story of how these relationships uphold coral reef health and what impact human activity has on this delicate balance.

25 .) CORAL REEFS. NATURE’S WONDERS by Walter and Jean Deas

Lists It Appears On:

  • Underwater
  • Oceans

“An introduction to the coral reef biology and ecology in a full-color identification guide to the better-known corals of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic.

Corals have for too long been regarded as interesting natural mementos, usually put on display on a shelf or in a glass cabinet, rather than as living animals, part of a captivating and delicately balanced ecological system. Today, scuba diving has provided a way for naturalists to study coral reefs as living ecological communities and for the sport diver to recognise many corals that were only known as dead display specimens.

True reef-building corals are limited in geographical distribution to the clear, warm sunlit waters of the tropical oceans. There are countless reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest, and most spectacular, coral reef province in the world. About 2000 kilometres long and located on Queensland’s continental shelf, it is made up of over 2900 individual coral reefs composed mainly of consolidated limestone debris formed from calcium carbonate with living corals on its surface. They vary in size, form and type, and the coral reef could be considered as the marine counterpart of a tropical rain forest. “

Charles Birkeland Living coral is a thin veneer, measured in millimeters. Yet this thin film of living tissue has shaped the face of the Earth by creating limestone structures sometimes over 1,300 m thick from the surface down to its base on volcanic rock (Enewetak Atoll), or over 2,000 km long (Great Barrier Reef). About half the world’s coastlines are in the tropics and about a third of the tropical coastlines are made of coral reef. Archipelagoes of hundreds of atolls such as the Marshalls, the Maldives, the Tuamotus, and most of the Carolines and Kiribati have been fonned by coral. In addition to enlarging high islands (such as the entire northern end of Guam) and extending and protecting coastlines, ancient biogenic reefs have fonned even larger areas on the present continents.

This is not only an in-depth marine awareness and identification book but is a comedy, tragedy and drama all rolled into one. Unlike other mind numbing marine reference books, this discovery guide puts life on the reef into human terms. Here corals become communist foul mouths, sea cucumbers are turned into hovering vacuums, sea stars are the ultimate Spiderman and sex life with a sponge is depicted as a hot and steamy night with a pin cushion. With more than 500 pictures this book is not only informative but is fun to read as it probes into the lifestyle, bizarre sex lives and habitats of life on the reef.

1 .) What is Natural? Coral Reef Crisis by Jan Sapp

Lists It Appears On:

  • Oceans
  • National Geographic
  • Alibris

“During the late 1960s and 1970s, massive herds of poisonous crown-of-thorns starfish suddenly began to infest coral reef communities around the world, leaving in their wake devastation comparable to a burnt-out rainforest. In What is Natural?, Jan Sapp both examines this ecological catastrophe and captures the intense debate among scientists about what caused the crisis, and how it should be handled.
The crown-of-thorns story takes readers on tropical expeditions around the world, and into both marine laboratories and government committees, where scientists rigorously search for answers to the many profound questions surrounding this event. Were these fierce starfish outbreaks the kind of manmade disaster heralded by such environmentalists as Rachel Carson in Silent Spring? Indeed, discussions of the cause of the starfish plagues have involved virtually every environmental issue of our timeover-fishing, pesticide use, atomic testing, rain forest depletion, and over-population, but many marine biologists maintain that the epidemic is a natural feature of coral-reef life, an ecological “”balance of nature”” that should not to be tampered with until we know the scientific truth of the crisis. But should we search for the scientific truth before taking action? And what if an environmental emergency cannot wait for a rigorous scientific search for “”the truth?”””
