23.) A La Carte: The Elements of an Elegant Home by Sherrill Canet

Lists It Appears On:

    • Best Design Books
    • House Beautiful

For New York-based interior designer Sherrill Canet, the past is something she recreates with relish, and is one of the hallmarks of her aesthetic. The decorator takes her cues from disparate periods and regions, including eighteenth century French and English antiques, chinoiserie, painted furniture, Art Deco, the glamour of the Gilded Age, and the mansions that once dotted the Gold Coast of Long Island, New York, a region Canet also calls home. A la Carte offers readers a tutorial in decorating in a range of styles, from Old World traditional to chic and tailored. Whether your library is a modern den or a gentleman’s English country retreat, Canet advises you on choosing the room’s essential elements – with comfort and function in mind. From mixing pieces and fabrics to furniture arranging, Canet helps would-be designers or homeowners create what, in the end, everyone dreams of-a happy, wonderful to live-in home.

Lists It Appears On:

    • Emily Henderson
    • The Little Design Corner

Rima Suqi has been described as having “shopping in her soul,” however she is much more than just shopping. She’s a self-proclaimed “numbers junkie” who – through key relationships with retailers and designers – has developed a keen understanding of the business behind retail. She knows it’s not enough to be a pretty product; it’s got to be a product that sells. For this reason, companies large and small have sought out this trend expert to help brand themselves, name their products, write press releases, brochures, catalogs and advertising copy. Television producers love her natural on-camera style and often book her for lifestyle segments on everything from travel to fashion trends; she also hosts in-store events, product launches and shopping tours on request. A contributing writer for Alef and Organic Spa magazines, Suqi writes “Best Bets” for New York Magazine’s online edition, has authored three style books and and regularly writes for national magazines.

Lists It Appears On:

    • Decor8
    • Red Online

Rachel Ashwell Couture Prairie takes her signature pastels, ruffles, and whimsical prettiness right to the heart of cowboy country. This is a journey in pictures and words, following Rachel through the fields of a little town called Round Top, home to one of the largest, most eclectic and vibrant antiques and flea markets in the world, and then back to Rachel’s newly acquired bed-and-breakfast in Texas. Here Rachel’s inspired finds, her creative imagination, eye for detail, and her commitment to beauty, comfort, and function have finally come together in one location: The Prairie by Rachel Ashwell—an irresistible destination. This book takes Rachel in a new direction, bringing her eye for cherished patinas and pastel prettiness into the endless landscapes and diverse architectural styles of Texas. Here you will see how her style adapts to corrugated metal sheeting and weathered timbers, and how it brings new life to elegant period mansions. Chapter by chapter, the book leads you through Rachel’s little houses on the prairie, from the Ranger’s Lounge where hearty breakfasts are served, to the Pearl Barn, scene of wedding parties and celebrations, stopping off at the evocatively named guest accommodation: Blue Bonnet Barn, Cornflower Cottage, Meadow Manor, Faith Cottage, and Liliput Lodge.

Lists It Appears On:

Forget perfection – Decorating with Style gives you the confidence to take risks with interior design, embrace what you love, and fill your home with infectiously fabulous stuff: comforting, inviting and imbued with personality. Decorating Abigail Ahern style is about creating spaces that make you happy – not just buying the latest ‘it’ chair. According to the internationally renowned interior designer, the most successful homes always have an element of the unexpected. Good taste is wonderful, but without a touch of eccentricity – some tension between spontaneity and rigour, refinement and rebellion – beautifully co-ordinated rooms can leave you cold. Proving that style has nothing to do with money and everything to do with confidence, Abigail goes back to basics to help you determine your own style, then demonstrates how to take interiors to the next level by mixing and layering different styles and eras; injecting intrigue into a room with some maximalist lighting or a decorative rug; playing around with scale, colour and texture to create an enchanting, idiosyncratic vibe. Packed with original ideas, beautiful photography, speedy updates and easy DIY projects – that transform affordable furniture and accessories into something you’d see in a designer showroom – this hip, hands-on guide offers all the tips, tricks and inspiration you need to create a stylish home.

Emily Chalmers and Ali Hanan explain how to find fresh and unexpected uses of second-hand pieces and antiques, and reveal how to mix old and new with flair and panache. The first part of the book, Flea Market Finds, looks at household goods, from fabrics and furniture to china, kitchenware, glass and lighting, and describes how to find special objects and indentify them on the basis of their quality, character, resillience, colour, and texture. The authors advocate a subtle mixing of styles, patterns, and colours, and emphasize the beauty of objects that have seen a bit of life. They explain how to locate bargain copies of modern classics–or the real things–and how to mix flea-market or thrift-store finds with high-end basics. The second part of the book, Putting It All Together, shows how to incorporate the style in every room–from the spaces where you cook, eat, sleep, or relax to bathing spaces and work spaces. The book ends with an extensive directory of suppliers

With little distinction between work and play, the new boho home often includes an office, art gallery, showroom, photography studio, restaurant, or even a pop-up shop. The New Bohemians explores 20 homes located primarily on the East and West coasts. Exclusive interviews with the owners, 12 DIY projects created by Blakeney and inspired by objects found in the homes, and a “Plant-O-Pedia” offer insight into achieving this aesthetic. In addition, each home is accompanied by an Adopt-an-Idea section that offers general decor, styling, and shopping tips for easy duplication in your own home.

Lists It Appears On:

    • Emily Henderson

Undecorate profiles twenty homes from all over the country, revealing their owners’ love of imperfection and penchant for surprise and unusual juxtapositions while inspiring readers to follow their own whimsy and practicalities in their personal spaces. An anglophile creates an English manor in Hollywood, mixing British flea-market finds with midcentury furniture. A car fanatic turns a vintage Airstream trailer into a master bedroom and situates it in the middle of a vast industrial loft in downtown Chicago. A couple transforms a log house in Nashville, Tennessee, by blending their modern and eclectic styles with the home’s rustic charm. Though the designs differ widely, the spaces all express an open-minded attitude. Some homes embrace their contexts, while others transcend them. All are shaped by instinct and imagination and share innovative ideas that readers can use to organically and elegantly create their home to match their lifestyle and tastes.
